Getting enough good quality sleep is one of the biggest contributing factors to good health. For many, the lack of good sleep is one part of the cycle of unhealthy habits.  To be able to make lasting change in one’s health, creating the conditions for a good sleep routine is one of the first and easiest steps one can take to begin this journey.

Since essential oils have a direct effect on the mind, they can help us enter a more restful state effortlessly. One clinical trial found that inhaling Lavender essential oil at bedtime improved the quality of sleep for the subjects. Many essential oils like Lavender and Frankincense are known to possess sedative properties and are able to induce tranquil states.

Incorporating such oils into your bedtime routine is very simple. Even just opening the bottle and inhaling the aromas that escape can be enough. Others prefer to place a drop or two on a cotton pad or piece of fabric that can be placed near the pillow or nightstand. BlueFlower’s rollers of Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), Frankincense (Boswellia carteri), or Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides) would be good choices for a skin application. Use with a gentle hand massage or chest rub and take some deep inhalations; relaxation will come easily.

Another technique is to use an aromatherapy diffuser to fill the room with a calming scent. If Lavender, Frankincense, or Vetiver just don’t do it, put in a few drops of Marjoram (Origanum majorana) and sleep will be at your doorstep. Marjoram’s herbaceous scent isn’t for everyone, but it has a strong sedative effect on the mind and that can amplify the effect of other oils in your bedtime blend. Work with your oils until you find the perfect combination, and have a restful night’s sleep, every night.
